About This Commentary

Śrīla Vishwanath Chakravarti Ṭhākura

Vishwanath Chakravarti Ṭhākura (c. 1626–1708) was one of the most celebrated Vaiṣṇava scholars and saints in the Gauḍīya lineage. Born in Bengal, he became renowned for his profound commentaries on the major scriptures of the Vaiṣṇava tradition.

His commentary on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the Sārārtha-darśinī ("that which reveals the essential meaning"), is considered one of the most authoritative and illuminating works in the tradition. It draws on the insights of previous ācāryas — Śrīdhara Svāmī, Sanātana Gosvāmī, and Jīva Gosvāmī — while adding Vishwanath's own deep realizations in the mood of mādhurya-bhakti.
